Vocal Ensemble EXAUDI – by Matthew Andrews

As part of Sound and Music’s Portfolio programme, 4 composers have the chance to work with EXAUDI to develop a piece for quartet of voices – soprano, counter-tenor, tenor and bass. For composers wanting to explore the capabilities of the voice in detail this is a fantastic opportunity to work closely with exceptional singers, with support from the ensemble’s director James Weeks and programme mentor Laurence Crane.

EXAUDI is one of the UK’s most exciting and versatile vocal ensembles, exponents of an incredible range of new music. The group works regularly with both established and emerging composers and is committed to performing the radical edges of contemporary music. Its singers are drawn from among the country’s brightest vocal talents, performing in a flexible line-up as a consort rather than a choir, and drawing inspiration from the strong individual tones of early music ensembles which allows a unique exploration of contemporary works.

Two experimental workshop sessions will offer a platform to try out material, culminating in a performance of the new short works in autumn 2015. For this Portfolio opportunity we’re seeking composers who are curious about experimenting with the sounds, colours and tones of the vocal ensemble, and who are keen to expand their practice in this area. It’s open to those who have already started to explore vocal writing, and those for whom this would be a new direction.

Applications close noon 9th July.
